Solvent printer marks Epson's entrance into outdoor capabilities.
Epson America has entered the outdoor commercial print market space with the introduction of its new solvent printer, the Stylus Pro GS6000. Suitable for outdoor as well as indoor work, the 64-in. roll-to-roll GS6000 features Epson UltraChrome GS inks, formulated from a new solvent-ink technology. As a result, reports Epson, the 8-color (CMYKcm+orange+green) GS6000 can produce a wide-color gamut and prints on nearly any solvent-based media. Applications include outdoor banners, billboards, automotive and bus wraps, construction and barricade signs, tradeshow graphics, and much more.
The GS6000, featuring a Dual-Array MicroPiezo AMC printhead designed for high-production environments, prints at 340 sq ft/hr for banner-quality printing and up to 91 sq ft/hr for photographic signage (it's also capable of printing fine-art reproductions at 71 sq ft/hr). 'We worked very closely with the industry for guidance to ensure that it exceeds the needs of today's commercial outdoor printers,' says Reed Hecht, product manager for Epson Professional Imaging. Maximum resolution is 1440 x 1440 dpi with droplet sizes as small as 3.7 picoliters.
The UltraChrome GS inks are created from a new solvent-based chemistry, offering nearly odorless printing and eliminating the need for special ventilation or air-purification systems, says Epson. The inks do not require a hazardous-materials designation for shipping or storage; in addition, the yellow inks do not contain nickel (Ni) compounds, reducing harmful effects on the environment and employees. The inks also dry fast, eliminating the necessity for drying equipment. Eight 950-ml 'hot-swappable' ink cartridges comprise the printer's ink system.
Included with each Stylus Pro GS6000 is the new ColorBurst Professional Production RIP, a full-featured PostScript Language Level 3-compatible RIP and print server. The RIP is Pantone licensed for spot color matching, offers ICC output profile support, and incorporates a new multi-threaded/ multi-processing architecture for faster job processing.
Additional features of the GS6000 include:
* Printhead ink-repelling coating technology to reduce nozzle clogging.
* Compatibility with various third-party RIP manufacturers and workflows.
* An automatic take-up reel system for unattended production of large print runs.
* Intelligent preventative maintenance system with a four-mode automatic cleaning system and a user-friendly maintenance process to reduce downtime.
* A media-heating system with individually controlled pre, platen, and post heaters with temperature controls via a front control panel or front-end RIP software.
* Standard USB connectivity with a USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet port.
MSRP: $28,995, including RIP, printer stand and automatic take-up reel system. The Stylus Pro GS6000 is slated for July 2008 availability and is supported with the standard Epson Preferred Limited Warranty.
In addition to the GS6000, Epson also has launched myEpsonPrinter.com, a Web-based printer information and management system. Commercial-printing professionals can monitor print jobs and consumables, such as ink and media, virtually in real time, as well as manage printers from remote locations.
